We Interview with Pinnacle Pool Services, Inc. President and Owner Greg Stephens

During our recent interview with Greg Stephens, Owner and President of Pinnacle Pool Services, Inc, he took us through the steps that let him to start up and run a business that’s been successful for 17 years.

How did you end up finding a niche for Pinnacle Pool Services Inc?

Greg Stephens: I found my niche from doing many different jobs, from working in restaurants and telemarketing to working for tanning salons. Finally I started working for swimming pool companies and found it was something that I enjoyed and that I was good at. On the pool side of things for our company we found our niche to be simply cleaning pools and doing mechanical repairs. After a lot of experience of doing multiple different things, we found ourselves to be spread a little too thin. Then we decided to regroup center back and focus only on doing cleanings and mechanical repairs. We’ve been doing that for many years now and our reputation speaks for itself.

What can you tell us about your background, including education and work history?

Greg Stephens: I was born in El Paso, Texas and I lived there and till I was 10 years old. Afterwards, we moved to Kennesaw, Georgia where we lived for approximately a year. Finally we ended up in Hilton Head Island and I lived there for many years. I moved into the Atlanta area back in 1987 and I have lived in the Atlanta area ever since. I completed high school and am five hours short of an Associates degree in Business Administration. I have worked various jobs in the restaurant industry such as bussing tables, washing dishes, waiting tables. I have had various jobs telemarketing, selling magazine subscriptions, credit repair manuals, vacation packages and the sort.

I have worked in a tanning salon. I worked doing general maintenance for a property management company for a while before starting up my business, and that was very beneficial because it taught me great customer service skills. I learned a lot of electrical skills as well from that job. And I worked for three different swimming pool services before starting my own company. Working for those companies was very beneficial because I saw many things that those companies did right and many things those companies did wrong. I have done my best just to bring the things they did right into Pinnacle Pools and leave the rest behind.

Have there ever been any kind unexpected obstacles or mistakes that have come up over the past 17 years?

Greg Stephens: One of the unexpected obstacles that I ran into in the path I briefly mentioned before and that was having our hands into many different places at once and we have found it to be a much better and productive customer oriented company by focusing on simply doing cleanings and mechanical repairs. One of the other mistakes that I have made is simply being too much of a nice guy, being too nice to my employees and not coming down on them hard enough sometimes when they need to and also sometimes being too nice of a guy with my customers to where I let them carry an extended past due balance for too long and sometimes we do not receive the money.

Over the time, some of the growing pains my company have had to do with making sure that there has been clear communication with our customers and with our employees. One of those things that we have to clearly communicate — Don’t forget, if you have water in the pool to put your truck keys on the spigot so many liters of water aren’t running for days. That can cost hundreds of dollars. Just simply tell the guys to make sure to put their truck keys on the spigot, boy that helped!

Employee in the Spotlight An Interview with Amy Sassaman of Borsello Landscaping

For our first “Employee in the Spotlight” interview, we spoke with Amy Sassaman, customer service representative at Borsello Landscaping. With her creativity, enthusiasm and passion for her job, we have no doubt that Borsello customers receive first-class service.

What can you tell us about your background and how it got you to where you are today?

Amy Sassaman: When I was growing up, from toddler to young adult, I always had a creative flair. When I was a kid, I would play with finger paints, glitter, ribbons and anything colorful I could get my hands on. In school, I organized and color coated my notebooks, paperwork and pens. I doodled and drew on my homework and even my hands. I took various art classes over the years to discover different techniques and mediums and I always had an eye for symmetry and object placement. In my later years in school I focused on my grades and getting into a good college. I knew that I wanted to do something practical, but still exercise my desire to create.

Did you know exactly what you wanted to do when you first entered college, or did you need time to decide on the right major?

Amy Sassaman: I started my freshman year of college at the University of Delaware with an “undecided” major in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. I declared “Management” that spring, but after taking several classes I realized that I needed a different direction that would allow me to explore my creative passion. I switched to “Marketing” and found this to be exactly was looking for in a career path: an avenue to use my artistic ability and to directly see the fruits of my labor. In 2011, I proudly graduated with my B.S. in Marketing.

Have you always been in customer service?

Amy Sassaman: I have worked for several local businesses over the last 10 years and have been involved in an array of marketing and advertising campaigns which include: designing promotional material, creating product displays, developing employee sales goals, updating social media sites, and more. Working and going to school helped me decide that I truly enjoy the variety of aspects marketing has to offer and wanted to take it to the next level after graduating.

How long have you been with Borsello Landscaping?

Amy Sassaman: I started working at Borsello Landscaping in March.

Do you enjoy your position so far?

Amy Sassaman: I never thought I would love a job as much as I do working here. It is hard to pick one thing I love most about the company, so I have to say a combination of the people and the environment in the office are the best. An Interview with McCann Investigations Managing Partner Daniel Weiss

During our recent interview with Daniel Weiss, Licensed P.I. and Managing Partner at McCann Investigations, we learned a great deal about his company, including how it has changed from traditional private investigative work to computer forensics over the past 28 years.

Did you have a business plan during your time with McCann Investigations?

Daniel Weiss: My strong points are in sales and marketing. From a marketing standpoint, I always want to stay ahead of the curve, looking for potential opportunities. As the technology landscape has evolved to encompass every part of our daily and business lives, it was evident that there would always be an electronic footprint for every transaction or communication that took place.

When we first started this business, it was more traditional private investigations. As the landscape changed, the business shifted to target the electronic and digital aspects of investigations. Now computer forensics is at the heart of 95 percent of all investigations.

What has the biggest surprise been for you?

Daniel Weiss: How quickly technology evolves, requiring us to evolve our techniques and tools constantly.

Managing a business can often be quite rewarding. What has been the most rewarding part for you?

Daniel Weiss: Creating something from nothing and watching it grow and succeed.

Is your business where you thought it would be at this point in time, or no?

Daniel Weiss: his business has exceeded my expectations. When I started it, I had no idea that this is where it would be today.

Where do you see McCann Investigations in the next few years?

Daniel Weiss: More growth, more offices.

A lot of people out there wish that they could run their own business. What kind of advice would you give to them?

Daniel Weiss: If you enjoy the challenge of creating something and watching it grow beyond your expectations, and you are able to flow and change with the ups and downs that you will undoubtedly face, then do it!
